Richard wilby

Owner of Forged Fly Fishing, Richard Wilby, has been fishing in British Columbia since he was 4 years old, transitioning into fly fishing in his early teens. When not float tubing around a local lake or swinging for salmon or steelhead, Richard is passionately designing new products that not only perform as a FORGED® product should but also boast fantastic visual appeal that fellow anglers envy. While fishing isn’t a fashion show, there is nothing wrong with looking and performing your best!

Forged history

Forged Fly Fishing was officially founded in 2010 in Victoria, British Columbia, but its roots run much deeper. In the early years, Richard often talked with his father about the dream of having a career centered around fly fishing. This dream evolved into the idea of creating fly reels that are both affordable and elegant, while also providing the substance and durability needed by West Coast anglers. This vision led to multiple designs of reels, fly boxes and more, culminating in the creation of FORGED®. The name is inspired by the image of a blacksmith, hunched over his anvil, hammer in hand, honing his craft. This imagery, combined with the Cold Forging process and the use of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining guided by Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems, ensures that every FORGED® product meets the highest standards of quality and precision. Assisted by the hard work and insight from our Field Team, Forged will continue to produce and design amazing products that we’re proud of, and we know you will be too.
